 UK Limited Company Basic Business Passbook Bank Account

The account we previously recommended, the Treasurers' account from HBOS,

was discontinued by them for new customers in January 2011 and we are still looking for a suitable guaranteed replacement.

 

There are a few passbook bank accounts provided by building societies around

the UK that are available to businesses (sole traders, partnerships and limited companies). There doesn't appear to be any such basic passbook accounts

from mainstream banking institutions any longer. The Halifax Treasurers's

account seems to be the last one.

 

The Halifax Asset Reserve Cheque Account (which was also available to non-personal customers) and the Business Investor account from the

Nationwide (which was a business savings investment account that was

being misused as a business current account by a minority of users) are

also not available to new customers.

 

Do a search for non-personal accounts and you might find a few business

accounts from building societies. Some of the accounts you will find are

easier to open than others. Some of these building society accounts are

strict savings accounts that require you to already possess a normal business account and will only accept initial opening funds by cheque from your existing business account. Some appear to be a bit more liberal although exact opening

procedures for many of them appear a little vague. You would have to check yourself regarding opening details and what type of activity is acceptable

with these accounts.

 

A selection of building society accounts that provide passbook / branch / postal accounts for some types of businesses include:

 

Bath Building Society offers a comprehensive selection of business accounts,

the main ones which might be of interest to you being the Business Direct Account or the Company Accounts. A few people recommend these.

 

Beverley Building Society has a savings business account called simply

Business Account that requires a minimum opening balance of £1000 and

can be operated online or by post.

 

The Loughborough Building Society has a business savings account called

the Instant Access Deposit Account which operates through a branch or by

post. The minimum opening balance is £10.

 

Monmouthshire Building Society has a business savings account called the

Corporate Instant which allows up to 150 withdrawals per year. A minimum

balance of £100 is required.

 

The Cambridge Building Society offers a savings account called the The

Cambridge Easy Access Business Saver which is available to businesses, charities and clubs and associations. A minimum investment of £1000 is

required. You can pay in one cheque per day, £1000 in cash per day and

make 2 withdrawals per calendar month. Access is by branch, post and

you can deposit funds over the phone using a debit card.
